Profile Information

What is a socially responsible organization?
It is;
a) a well managed one.
b) an organisation with clear organisational goals.
c) consistent in the values that is applies to its activity.

Social Responsibility is the framework that defines an organisations' impacts on society and the environment. - it supports the cultural, ethical and economic structure of the organisation and promotes the sustainable delivery of organisational & societal goals.
About me
My background includes a 17 year career in business development, the majority of which was with GE Capital, followed by 9 years specialising in Corporate Responsibility.
I have been successful in helping organisations recognise the importance of Corporate Responsibility, or increasingly, Social Responsibility and why it is an appropriate area of activity for those interested in maximising productivity, competitiveness and profitability.
I am now engaged in providing the mechanisms and structures required by organisations and institutions to gain strategic control of this area and develop consistent patterns of performance.

Tiffany,

There is a project that I am working on to help the higher and further education sector (Universities and Colleges in Scotland) establish a sector wide approach towards sustainability and social responsibility. I have always thought that there should be much clearer leadership on this agenda coming from this sector. I am currently concentrating on the further education rather than higher education institutions (Colleges not Universities)

The question I am addressing is 'How can Scotland’s Colleges lead the way to a Sustainable Future?'

Colleges are capable of exerting powerful and positive influence over our society’s ‘ability to change’. However, this capability also carries a responsibility.

If the proportion of society directly influenced by Colleges (this is much greater than just those who graduate from these institutions) do not acquire an appropriate understanding of the reality and opportunity of sustainability, the route towards a sustainable future will remain uncertain.

Therefore Colleges must be at the forefront of understanding of social responsibility and sustainability. They must be leading the development and integration of both in learning and teaching and in institutional performance.

Fulfilling the critical role of informing our society will require real institutional change and not just the integration of sustainability concepts within the curriculum.

I'll be setting something up on the forum area of this ite soon so I will keep you informed of any developments. Malcolm.

Or perhaps not blog, but it in the Forum area of the site, to see if we can engage some of those members of academia in a discussion...followed, perhaps by a group. Just some thoughts to consider.

Thank you for your story and answer! I do believe you're in the right place, and would suggest that perhaps you A) Blog about your passion concerning engaging and educating students and/or B) start a group on this site of interested university professors/deans who are like-minded to discuss how best to engage other deans and professors. There are a fair number of members of the community from academia that I could connect together if there is interest....
