Margaret,

I was delighted to see you at the meeting on Monday. I've heard of your book and work and am excited that you see the connections, or possible connections between our interest in SR and your wisdom.

I look forward to learning more over the months ahead. I can't make the meeting Tom offered as I'll be out of town, but trust there will be other opportunities.

Paul

Profile Information

What is a socially responsible organization?
An organization that does not take more from the planet than the planet can replace or absorb, that keeps ecosystems intact, that honors biodiversity. An organization that has respect for human dignity and a profound sense of equity and justice at its core. An organization that does not exploit humans or other living creatures and systems for profit or personal/organizational gain. An organization that has service to the common good as its primary purpose and mission.
About me
I worked for 27 years in Washington DC as co-coordinator, then director of the Religious Task Force on Central America and Mexico. The emphasis was on human rights, a change in US policy towards the region, and supporting a grassroots solidarity movement. I turned my focus to the ecological crisis beginning in 2004, creating the project, Spirituality and Ecological Hope, under the sponsorship of the Center for New Creation. I have written two books, one based on the North American experience within the solidarity movement, and the second, "Living Beyond the 'End of the World:' A Spirituality of Hope," a description of the ecological crisis confronting us and the moral challenge it poses for US society.

Here is the challenge that keeps me awake nights. We are in ecological overshoot. The Earth can sustain indefinitely the consumption and waste of the US for half a billion people. We need 1.4 Earths to sustain current levels of human consumption and waste. We need 4-5 additional planets if we intend for everyone on Earth to aspire to the US way of life. We will add 2-3 billion people to the planet in the next 40 years.

This is the very definition of non-sustainability. We are beyond overshoot,… Continue
